about

"A stark but compelling pot-pourri of musical threads." - The Times (UK)

"(Comorian) create music that reflects people with a spirit that refuses to be dominated. Soubi and Mmadi play stringed instruments...their sound is surprisingly complex, creating a brew that borders on the work of Tinariwen although the sound is much more sparse." - Folk Radio

To celebrate their appearance at this year's WOMAD Festival, their first-ever concert outside of the Comoro Islands, Comorian is releasing a new single: "The Smallest Country in the World (We are Ancient)." It is an unreleased track, but as with their acclaimed debut album “We are an Island, but We’re not Alone,” it was recorded live and outdoors on Grande Comore island by acclaimed producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Ustad Saami, Zomba Prison Project).

Showcasing the duo's yearning vocals and sun-baked musical meditations (played on local string and percussion instruments), the song evokes the isolated individualism found in their music. The subtitle of the track notes that "we are ancient." and indeed there is a deep sense of timeless, hard-earned expression in this short but compelling song.

The Comoro Islands are known locally as the “islands of the moon.” "The Smallest Country in the World (We are Ancient)" provides another vivid opportunity to hear unvarnished, original music from this region.
